স্যাম ২৫ বছরের উচ্চশিক্ষিত একজন যুবক। সে ঢাকায় বসবাসরত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের একজন শিক্ষক। ছয় বছর আগে, উনিশ বছর বয়সে স্নাতক ডিগ্রী শেষ করার পর সে আবিষ্কার করলো যে, বাংলাদেশের প্রতিষ্ঠিত সাংস্কৃতিক রীতি থেকে তার যৌণ প্রবনতা আলাদা। বর্তমানে একজন পুরুষের সাথে তার রোমান্টিক সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। আগে তার নারীদের সাথেও যৌণ সংযোগ ঘটেছিল এবং নিজেকে সে উভকামী (Bisexual) হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে। স্যাম এবং তার পুরুষ বন্ধুটি একসাথে ঘুরে বেড়ায়, ঢাকার রাস্তায় হাত ধরাধরি করে হাঁটে এবং যখন একে অন্যের বাসায় যায় তখন একই বিছানায় শোয়। যেহেতু বাংলাদেশে দু’জন পুরুষের মধ্যে বন্ধুত্ব ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে খুবই স্বাভাবিক হিসেবে বিবেচ্য, সে কারণে এই গোপন চর্চ্চা তাদের অনুমানকৃত বিষমকামি (Heterosexual) পরিচয়ের উপর কোন সন্দেহের ছায়া পড়তে দেয় না। স্যাম ও তার পুরুষ বন্ধুটির সম্পর্ককে পরিবার এবং বন্ধুরা ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধুত্ব হিসেবে মনে করে। স্যামের ব্যাখ্যা, “যতক্ষন পর্যন্ত আপনি আপনার পরিবারের কাছ থেকে এটা লুকিয়ে রাখবেন, ততক্ষন পর্যন্ত আপনি নিরাপদ।” স্যাম তার প্রকৃত নাম নয়। সম্ভাব্য সামাজিক এবং আইনি পরিণতি সম্পর্কে ভীত স্যাম শুধুমাত্র ছদ্মনামেই কথা বলতে রাজী হয়েছে। Continue reading “LGBT গোষ্ঠীর ৩৭৭ ধারা প্রত্যাহারের আহবান”
A few months ago, I was on a motorcycle trip from my hometown in Germany to Cape Town in South Africa. While passing through the East African country of Tanzania, I encountered a packed bus, presumably on the way to Dar es Salaam. The bus had just passed me at considerable speed when I see a group of young goats at a distance of a few hundred meters slowly crossing the highway. Great empires may come and go, but like the tides, they leave behind a tangled assortment of flotsam and jetsam. In the case of the British Empire, that included much that one might admire, but also a British Protestant morality that was codified in laws that persist to this day. Section 377 of the colonial Penal Code is a striking example. It classed consensual oral and anal sex as “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” and made it a crime punishable with imprisonment for life. When the British administrators withdrew, they took their soldiers, but left their law books behind. Section 377 was recently repealed in India, but it is still very much on the books in Bangladesh.
